Confused by cannabis-industry terms? We have you covered.
At PhytoLab, we don’t want to just give you numbers and abberviations – we want to help you understand your results. Your cannabis product analysis results will list a number of different components. But a list of acronyms can be pretty overwhelming! Fortunately, we have a rundown available here to make these results as sensible to you as possible. All result values are given as percent by weight.
Total active cannabinoids (TAC): This is the total percent by weight of cannabinoids.
Total THC: The calculated value of tetrahydrocannabinol (commonly called THC) – the primary psychoactive chemical in cannabis – available from THC-A by percent weight plus THC present.
Delta 9/THC-A: Most cannabinoids from cannabis plants come in both a carboxylated and decarboxylated form. Delta 9 is the carboxylated form of THC.
CBD/CBD-A: CBD is cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid component of the plant's extract, discovered in 1940. Medically, it’s an anticonvulsant used to treat multiple forms of epilepsy. As of 2022, clinical research on CBD included studies related to the treatment of anxiety, addiction, movement disorders and pain, but there is insufficient high-quality evidence that CBD is effective for managing these conditions.
CBG/CBG-A: This is cannabigerol, a non-psychoactive minor cannabinoid. The compound is the decarboxylated form of cannabigerolic acid (CBG-A), the parent molecule from which other cannabinoids are biosynthesized.
During plant growth, most of the CBG is converted into other cannabinoids, primarily tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD), leaving about 1% CBG in the plant. Some strains produce larger amounts of CBG and CBG-A while having low quantities of other cannabinoids.
CBC/CBC-A: Cannabichromene, a non-psychoactive minor cannabinoid that exhibits anti-inflammatory properties in vitro, which may contribute to cannabis analgesic effects.
THCV/THCV-A: This is tetrahydrocannabivarin, a minor cannabinoid with unique properties that set it apart from the more common cannabinoids. The main advantage of THCV over THC is the lack of psychoactive effects. In rodent studies, THCV decreases appetite, increases satiety and up-regulates energy metabolism.
CBN/CBN-A: Cannabinol is a mildly psychoactive cannabinoid that acts as a low-affinity partial agonist at both CB1 and CB2 receptors. This activity at CB1 and CB2 receptors constitutes interaction of CBN with the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
Delta 8-THC: Where Delta 9 is derived from cannabis plants, Delta 8 is a synthetic cannabinoid produced from CBD.
